ePaper: Why RID matters.
Drawing on disaster risk management (DRM) and reduction (DRR) as well as Climate Change Adaptation (CCA), the guiding principle of risk-informed development (RID) calls for gathering as much information on risks as needed to make appropriate decisions, considering especially worst-case scenarios, with the goal of protecting and strengthening development against possible negative impacts. This knowledge feeds into decision-making processes to reduce remaining risk levels and inform development planning and investments. It is important to question and readjust development measures in light of the complex, interdependent and dynamic nature of risks.
RID aims to improve decision-making in all areas and sectors of development to consider existing and future risks. This emphasizes the importance of mainstreaming risk considerations into all decision-making to contribute to RID, as it offers great opportunities for improving development outcomes and building resilience in a rapidly changing world. By working together across sectors and adopting a risk-informed approach to development, we can achieve a more sustainable and resilient future for all society. (UNDP, 2019; UNDP, 2022)
